Event Details:
Join a park ranger for a guided birding hike from Oconee Station State Historic Site to beautiful Station Cove Falls. The trail winds through forested habitat of the foothills, so you will encounter elevation changes of less than 25 feet over short distances. We will discuss basic bird identification techniques, listen for bird calls, and observe bird behavior along the way.
Some of our discussions will explore how South Carolina’s 18th-century backcountry residents used birds as seasonal indicators, resources, and everyday companions. The program concludes at Station Cove Falls, a scenic spot perfect for reflecting on the relationship between landscape, wildlife, and human history before the return walk.

This hike is designed for guests 8yo and above.
Binoculars are encouraged, but not required.
It is suitable for most hikers who can navigate short elevation changes, periodic rocks in the trail tread, and a few rock steps at small stream crossings.
Participants are invited to record sightings as part of South Carolina’s statewide birding challenge as well!
